1st XI vs Harrow Town

Saturday, 21st June 2003 - League

North London Greene and bear it

One point in June may yet be worth a great deal more come August for North London. Their home game against Harrow Town on Saturday saw both sides cagey about the cost of defeat play out a draw that maintains North London's twenty point cushion over third placed Harrow Town. It was a game that neither side was prepared to risk losing, yet North London came close to throwing it all away, before Jim Greene emerged as the hero of the day.

Greene, in early after NL's had openers flopped, batted through two and a half hours and watched five of his team-mates depart as North London flirted with disaster. Rian DeVilliers kept Greene company throughout the last hour as Harrow Town revealed the extent of their ambitions by bowling to defensive fields and protecting their four point winning draw. Greene finished 75n.o as North London closed on 160-7 chasing the Town's 244-8.

Harrow Town's challenging total was built on careful early progress as North London's bowlers worked hard to contain on a flat pitch in glorious sunshine. At 108-2 after 28 overs Town looked set for a big total. Tight bowling from Ben Wakeford and Robbie Tombs (2-38) was well supported in the field as North London pulled themselves back into the game. At the halfway stage Town had limped to 200-8, but 40 runs from the final four overs snatched back the momentum and ensured North London would have a big chase.

Jack Godfrey-Wood (30) and DeVilliers had reason to be pleased with their efforts, but it was Greene's day and a point for North London that could yet prove of great importance.

Man of the Match

Jim Greene - 75n.o and it might have been more had he not had to block for the draw in the closing stages.

Carrying the Kit

Maroof Anwar - Excellent catch on the boundary, but run out with out facing a ball. Endured a cruel day.
